Lithium mining

Galaxy Resources

Site reporting at Mt Cattlin ran on hundreds of linked spreadsheets, and one person's whole job was keeping them alive.

The problem

Every daily figure was keyed by hand, including numbers re-typed from the SCADA historian. Hundreds of links between files. Errors were hard to trace and easy to make. It needed one person full-time just to manage the data.

What we did

Built a reporting platform on AWS fed straight from source: a SCADA interface to the GE Data Historian, Active Directory sign-on, upload of the mine-plan spreadsheets, and entry forms only for what has no feed. Converted hundreds of spreadsheet formulas into code that reproduces the original results, over a database holding 300-plus columns of daily data. Left Galaxy free to use its own reporting tools. This was Galaxy's first step onto AWS.

What's simpler now

  • Reporting fed from the systems that make the numbers.
  • Manual entry cut back to what reporting needs.
  • No fragile links, and every figure traceable to its source.
